Web Development Really Sucks
Tags: |

Loath, despise, hate, infuriate, rage inducing catalyst of death and destruction ... these words come to mind when I think of the time I've spent creating this site. How people do this for a living, I will never know. Wondering why this site only "officially" supports Firefox? I'll tell you why.

This site only officially supports Firefox because it was my main browser while I was on Windows XP and I still use it occasionally on Windows Vista. Now, IE has the most market share, Firefox comes in second, Opera has ... some people using it, and then there are Mac users with Safari; let's not forget the few hundred other browsers out there with a pinch of market share. Basically, that's a whole lot of configurations to support.

I didn't start off the website development thinking, "I'm going to be cool and make a statement!" I happened to be using Firefox when I started working on the site, tweaking the theme and features, and so on. Shortly after I smoothed things out to my liking, I showed the team and that's where problems first showed up. A few team members use IE 6 and they reported that the website looked "like crap" and wanted to know what drugs I had taken for the past week. Those on Firefox, however, liked the site.

Long story short, after showing the guys on IE 6 what I intended the site to look like, they liked it, too. So, armed with the knowledge that the site looked bad on IE 6, I fired up my copy and started working through the numerous bugs. Another long story short, I cleared out critical issues and still had a few minor changes to make. Hoping back into Firefox, the site no longer looked exactly how I wanted it, fury ensues. A little more back and forth went on before I finally decided it was time to make the site "perfect" in Firefox and "good enough" in IE and other browsers.

IE 7 actually does a really good job of getting it almost right and IE 6 isn't half bad anymore, either. You can still certainly use the site with IE, probably those other browsers too, and you're free to do so. Just know that if you see any bugs in those browsers, they're probably never going to be fixed unless they're an issue in Firefox as well.

I much prefer application development to web development. With applications, you get to write almost all of the rules, no standards compliance to (usually) worry about. I think the site came out pretty good for me not being a web developer in any way, shape, or form. What do you guys (constructively) think?

Hummm.... Im surprised no one has commented. Anyways im very glad you picked FireFox out of all the other web browsers. Also you remind me of a yoyo. Go to IE go back to firefox. Also one more thing it says I always fail the math problem the first time. I know I got it right. But when I submit the message it then says im right.

yep web development truly sucks, and c# truly rules :p Although perhaps you should take a look at dreamweaver, as that makes life alot easier...

Yeah, I'm being a teacher assistant for a web design class and I have to say I hate Dreamweaver.  For the people that cannot understand directory scope, Dreamweaver allows them to link images that don't actually show up in a browser or fail if the site was actually hosted.  The auto-linking + user error = more tedious work for me.

Personally, I think Web Design is too limited.  I like C++ where I can use all the processor power and not have to worry about your download speeds.

I much prefer application development to web development.

You're qualified for neither.

Assface be silent! Let's see YOUR awesome halo-modding software... Oh.. you're not a programmer but just some dumbass? Thought so.

I'm not surprised you deleted my last response. All it does is further stroke my ego to know that something I wrote infuriated you so much, that you were at a complete loss for words.

I definitely don't see you as a 'peer' or an 'equal,' but we both have something important in common: neither of us will ever code a map editor for halo.

Fuckhead be silent! Let's see YOUR job or wife...

Oh...you're not worth anything but just some dumbfuck? Thought so.

Seriously, maybe some people have better things to do then spend all thier time making some halo modding app. Hmm... and if you got a problem with that then you should sanction me, sanction me with yourarmy, oh! wait a minute, you don't have an army, I guess you need to shut the fuck up!

Nick you did a great job on the site, and it looks very 'prettyful' on Safari,
more than you think.

For an application dev you did a great job on the site. Bravo.

I'm not anything offically but Certs and Degrees aside I have a Half Decent website(s) and A few applications that I wrote for a few buisness around my city that have been in use everyday for 5+ years now.

While I can't say that I make a living doing any of these things I can say is that from a hobbists point of view, I think you're doin a pretty damn good job. I still Play Halo2, I just stick with the customs and arange everything on the web. So If you don't like it, (talking to the haters) you can get out!!!

I actually think it looks really nice. IMHO, too many halo related sites have dark, depressing, flash intensive colour schemes. It's wonderful to see a clean, easy on the eyes, clean colour scheme on a halo related website.

Now the catch (you knew there was going to be one :D). Constructive (hopefully) comments -

1) Is there a possibility of having a link to the list of dev quotes (or even a button that just refreshes the quote)? It's just that I think they're quite amusing, and I would like to see more of them, without having to refresh the page each time...

2) The comment box that I'm typing in at the moment is a bit strange (this also happens in firefox) - the text that I type goes outside the box...but when I go too many (I think about 5) characters outside the box, the typing goes on to the next line...but with about 2 characters still outside the box. Sorry, it's difficult to explain.

3) Sum rejects the correct answer first time round...

I bet you thought people had finished leaving comments on this post!
